Building a granny annex has become a relatively straightforward process thanks to the many suppliers who offer full turn-key solutions – helping you deal with everything from design, planning permission and then completing the build for you.
But even then, there are matters that your family should consider and discuss before starting a project.
Here are five key areas you should consider first.
Family
What will family relations be like after the build? Will the person living in the annexe be independent or need your support? Will external support be needed? Discuss boundaries and what all parties expect from living so close together.
Finances
Just some of the financial discussions that need to take place are; selling any existing property, funding the build, and ongoing costs and bills. It’s important to be open with each other about finances and what is expected of whom.
Timescales
Has a need been identified for an annexe? If so, find out what build timescales are like and if providers can meet your expectations. You might need to start sooner than you think; planning permission can take several weeks.
The Future
When planning an annexe, think about future-proofing it by installing access ramps and easily accessible bathrooms etc. Your relative may not have mobility issues now but as we age, things like a walk-in shower will become more important.
Builders
Choose your builder/provider carefully. To make your project as easy as possible, look for suppliers who can handle everything for you – from design through to the finishing touches. Some builders will even help you with planning permission.
