Our customer Jane needed a home that allowed her to live in her own living space and remain independent with her daughter close by.
Jane lived over 2 hours drive away from her daughter which meant visits were not very frequent. After a few falls and the need for a knee operation; Jane and her daughter Andrea decided it was time to live closer to one another.
After a year or so of living in her iHus Annexe, we interviewed both Jane and her daughter to find out about their experience.
Why did you opt for Annexe living as opposed to other options, for example care homes?
Care home living just isn’t for me, it wasn’t even an option. I’m not a very sociable person and I don’t think I would cope well with a routine or joining in with group activities that take place in care homes.
I am a very independent person, I’ve been independent all of my life and I don’t want that to stop now! Living in an Annexe was the right choice for me because I still have my independence, I just have my daughter around to help me now.
How did you find out about iHus?
Janes daughter: We searched everywhere, we looked at caravan sites and assisted living and we weren’t convinced those would be the right option. But then we came across us on google and realized we were quite local which was nice.
I called ihus and spoke to a lady called Jan who arranged a consultation for us. We didn’t want Mum to live in a caravan, we wanted her to live in a proper home. When we looked online we were surprised how much the Annexe looked like a proper home. But then when we went to view a show Annexe, an ‘open hus’, in Tickhill it was a very nice surprise to see how much they look and feel like a new build bungalow. It’s great to see one in real life and we’d highly recommend a visit as you realize how similar they to a real bungalow, but bigger.
Why did you choose iHus to build your Annexe?
Janes daughter: Mum made the decision as it was going to be her home. Mum definitely couldn’t live under the same roof as someone else, she really needs her own independence. Mum was impressed with the offering from iHus and she ultimately chose as its her home and her money. So we had discussions but she felt comfortable working with a local company especially after visiting a show home. She knew it had to be something substantial and after viewing somebody else’s Annexe she pretty much made her mind up. As well as this, anything we wanted was possible. Whether that was size wise, whether we wanted open plan or not, they let us customize as we liked and could change throughout the process too.
We didn’t find iHus to be the cheapest company to go with, but the build quality and choices available of everything you want in there made our decision. They’re proper homes not just mobile homes.
Are you happy living in your Annexe?
Yes I am very happy. The Annexe is a very nice place to live. I do miss the area that I used to live in and it takes some time adjusting, but I need help now so you have to accept changes when you get older.
What is your favorite thing about your Annexe?
By far the best thing is being close to my daughter. I feel a lot safer. I will have somebody on hand after my operation too which will put my mind at ease. I get to see my daughters pets each day which I wouldn’t be able to do if I was in a care home. I love the fact that it is a new build and everything is brand new.
Would you say you are able to live independently?
Very much so. I have my own space and can go days without seeing my daughter at times if we have our own things on and are busy.
Do you get any visitors to your Annexe?
Yes my grandson comes down to visit which is nice, but I do like my own space so I don’t have too many people coming around as that’s the way I like it. I also then get to go to Cheshire to visit my friends which is a nice change of scenery.
Do you have any hobbies?
I like to do a lot of reading and I also cook quite a lot. Sometimes I nip over to my daughters for dinner there if I don’t feel like coming. We also go out through the day to garden centers, especially in the Summer. Sometimes we go for meals, or go and get fish and chips and bring it back home.
Would you recommend living in an annexe?
Yes I would recommend living in an annexe! Especially if you are wanting to live closer to family. I would recommend it over living within a family members home too, as you get your own space and independent. I also could not live in a care home, so this is the perfect thing to do if that isn’t your kind of thing.
