We felt sure that my wife would have to go into care eventually, so Dawn had the idea of building an annexe. I was already looking for a flat at first, but an annexe seemed a good idea as we would be close to family, to the medical centre we already used plus it had the big advantage of being more familiar for Pat – she loved the garden.
Ken and daughter in law, Dawn, initially thought about downsizing to a flat or an annexe when wife and Mum, Pat, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. The family felt that eventually Pat would go into a nursing home, leaving Ken on his own.
“We felt sure that my wife would have to go into care eventually, so Dawn had the idea of building an annexe. I was already looking for a flat at first, but an annexe seemed a good idea as we would be close to family, to the medical centre we already used plus it had the big advantage of being more familiar for Pat – she loved the garden.” Says Ken.
A quick internet search later and Dawn came across the iHUS website;
“We got in touch with iHUS,” says Dawn, “and I was so impressed with the friendly service, no pressure service. The lady we initially spoke to answered so many questions and helped us out and then offered to send a brochure.”
Once Ken had looked at the brochure a consultation was arranged to discuss the family’s needs in more detail.
Installing a two-bedroom annexe for the family was easy as the garden was spacious – so much so that the annexe isn’t even visible from the windows of the house. Ken now has his own little home with Charlie the dog.
“Sadly my wife passed away as we were halfway through the build,” says Ken, “but iHUS were great with us, letting us take our time with decisions and even sending flowers.”
Ken is settled into life in his annexe now and couldn’t be happier with the choice they made. With a flat EDM rubber roof and unusual blue weatherboard cladding, the annexe has a very contemporary feel to it – something Dawn pushed for!
“Ken wanted something a little more traditional looking initially but I managed to talk him round and we couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. It’s a new building so we wanted it to look modern.” Says Dawn.
“It fits in with the garden,” adds Ken, “and I’m glad we went for a more modern style now. It’s so spacious and comfortable inside. I give it an 11/10!”
Ken is also benefiting from still being able to tend to the garden which his late wife loved and is glad of not having to change doctors or clinics.
Dawn says; “it can be a hassle trying to register with a new GP or dentist when you move to a new area, Ken has been able to stay within reach of all the facilities he already uses, plus be close too family. He and Charlie are really happy in the annexe and we feel we made a good decision.”
