What is an annexe?
A granny annexe is a compact, self-contained living space located on the same property as a main family home. It typically includes one or two bedrooms, a living area, a fully equipped kitchen, and a private bathroom. Often designed for elderly family members, such as parents or grandparents, granny annexes offer a balance of independence and proximity for multi-generational living.
While commonly used for senior relatives, a garden annexe can also be ideal additional living space for adult children or guests. These purpose-built spaces are becoming increasingly popular across the UK due to their flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and ability to keep families close—without sacrificing personal space.
What are the benefits of Annexe living?
Embarking on a new, exciting chapter with semi-dependent living in a granny annexe offers numerous lifestyle benefits.
Strengthen family bonds and enhance your well-being – physically, emotionally, and mentally – by downsizing to a more manageable space that still provides the comfort and security of home. This lifestyle change fosters a sense of community and belonging, ensuring you and your loved ones can thrive together.

Offering semi-dependent and domiciliary care – it supports the well-being of your loved ones while providing a cost-effective solution. Compared to the significant cost of residential care, an annexe can offer a better return on investment within 3-5 years. It also allows for at-home child care, boosting quality time and ensuring that the elderly and the young receive the attention they need in a familiar, comforting environment.
