A bespoke designed flat roofed 2 bedroomed annexe in Maidstone, Kent; finished with a duel aspect oversail canopy, fitted with LED down lights. The external walls are clad in Dark Grey Marley Cedral composite weatherboard with Anthracite grey on white PVC windows & doors and a grey composite decked patio and walk way complete this very contemporary styled annexe.
I think if you have a parent who is perfectly independent and mobile, it is brilliant. It takes away the stress of when they are poorly. Mum has still got her life and I have mine. We can both get on with what we want to do.
A beautiful contemporary annexe was installed for Margaret Wilson and her partner in daughter Nicky’s garden – read on for more information about the project and both Margaret and Nicky’s thoughts on the process.
When Nicky and her partner bought a new property, they came up with the idea of letting Nicky’s parents build a new home in their garden. With concerns over health and the rising price of elderly care options, the family found this to be a cost-effective option which would also help keep the family connected and not have to worry about each other.
It was quickly decided that a modular annexe would suit both Margaret and her partners needs so the family went in search of a provider. After speaking with several companies and being less than impressed, iHUS were chosen thanks to their friendly efficient service. It also helped that Margaret is originally from Yorkshire and liked the idea of working with a Yorkshire manufacturer!
Nicky said; “the initial process was plain sailing – we didn’t really have to do anything! iHUS met with us to discuss planning and designs, what size annexe we could comfortably build and they were also keen to hear about Mum and Dads health issues and why we needed a two bedroom annexe”
Margaret was also thrilled with the service received, although still had some reservations about downsizing; “Although we were happy with the design, I was still concerned about space as we were downsizing from a three bedroomed house”
The annexe installed is a bespoke Loversall model, finished with a duel aspect oversail canopy and fitted with LED down lights. The external walls are clad in Dark Grey Marley Cedral composite weatherboard and white PVC windows were installed to give the annexe a modern look. Outdoors, a dark grey decked patio and walkway complete the look and provide a space to put a couple of chairs in the summer and enjoy a drink.
The entire family were thrilled with the results once the project was finished and Margaret soon realised that the space provided inside the annex would be ideal; “right the way through the process I was still worried about downsizing”, says Margaret, “I did panic a little bit! But, as soon as the paint went on the walls, I started to see the bigger picture. It’s the perfect size for me.”
Nicky even rates the annexe as better than her own home and quite often pops over to her mum’s ‘retreat’. She does appreciate though that its fantastic to have her mum so close by yet still have her own space; “I think an annexe is a brilliant idea if you’ve got a parent like I have who’s perfectly independent and mobile as it takes away the stress of worrying if they get a bit poorly or feel unwell – I can be over there in five seconds. But otherwise, Mum can close her door and I can close mine and we can both get on with whatever we’re doing!”
Sadly, Nicky’s father passed, meaning Margaret now lives alone in her annexe but having her daughter and family so close has been a great source of comfort; “After John died, I would often call Nicky and she would be straight over, so that was a great help to me.” says Margaret. “I’m settled in now and at night time I can read or watch television but its great to know I have my family nearby if I need them.”
10/10 – The perfect solution. Here is why Chris decided it was time to ‘take the plunge’ into Garden Annexe Living.
