When Zoe had an annexe built in her garden in 2014, it was designed as the perfect place for her mother to live independently while remaining close to family. More than a decade later, that same space has taken on a new role, demonstrating how an iHus annexe can evolve alongside changing family needs, while continuing to add value to everyday life.

“It was the perfect home for my mum. But even though she no longer lives in it, we’ve been able to adapt its use for my son, who is able to have his own space outside of the main family home.”

Designed to adapt over time

What began as a comfortable, self-contained home for Zoe’s mother has seamlessly transitioned into a space for the next generation. As circumstances changed, the annexe proved its flexibility – easily adapted to suit a completely different lifestyle.

Today, it has been refreshed with a more contemporary feel for her son, showing how a well-built annexe is not limited to a single purpose but can be reimagined to meet the needs of whoever lives there. It’s a long-term investment that continues to work for the whole family, year after year.

A timeless exterior with lasting appeal

Set within the garden, the annexe has a clean, simple exterior that has stood the test of time. Soft-toned cladding, crisp white-framed windows and doors, and a neat outdoor seating area create a welcoming, low-maintenance space that still feels fresh more than a decade on.

The layout makes the most of the available footprint, while the connection to the garden adds a sense of openness and calm – a setting that feels just as relevant today as when it was first completed.

Keeping family close, whatever life brings

At its heart, the annexe has always been about family. It allowed Zoe’s mother to live independently while staying close by, offering reassurance and connection on a daily basis.

Now, it provides Zoe’s son with a place of his own, a sense of independence while still being part of the wider household. This ability to support different generations at different times highlights the true value of annexe living: creating spaces that bring families closer together, no matter how life evolves.
